Sri Lanka leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga retires from Test cricket. Hasaranga said the reason behind the decision is to prolong his career as a limited-overs cricketer. Despite appearing in four Test matches, the all-rounder has not been a consistent part of Sri Lanka's Test team during the past two years.

Although he did score a half-century in South Africa, had mostly struggled to make an impression with the ball in the traditional format of the game, picking up just four wickets at an average of 100.75. The 26-year-old has represented the country in 48 one-day internationals and 58 T20I games, picking up a total of 158 wickets and scoring 1365 runs.

We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward: Ashley De Silva

Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket stated, "We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward." The board is fine with his decision and wants him to explore other possibilities as long as he is still available for Sri Lanka's white-ball matches.

The Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) spinner has recently been impressive in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. He picked up 16 wickets in Lanka's opening three matches, as he matched Waqar Younis’ record for five-wicket hauls in three consecutive ODIs, and from there he finished with 22 wickets at an average of just 12.9. The all-rounder has been in fine form in the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL), picking up 11 wickets and scoring 212 runs, including two fifties for B-Love Kandy.

Hasaranga played 44 first-class games, picking up 102 wickets. He also has three first-class centuries and 19 half-centuries. He was the highest wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. The leg-spinner picked up 16 wickets at an economy of 5.20. In T20 World Cup 2022, the leggie picked up from where he left in the UAE and picked up 15 wickets in eight games at an economy rate of 6.41 with best bowling figures of 3/8.

In the Asia Cup, which begins on August 30, he is set to play a significant part for Sri Lanka as they prepare to defend their championship. Additionally, the Indian wickets are considered to be favourable for spinners, he can be a significant threat to the opposition's players during the 50-over World Cup.
