Yashasvi Jaiswal's international career began on a high note, but this is only the beginning he has a long way to go. Jaiswal rewarded selectors' confidence with a superb knock in the first Test against the West Indies on Thursday and finished off an unbelievable rags-to-riches story in his first-ever game for the Indian side.
The left-handed opener, who used to peddle 'panipuri' for pocket money, was overcome with emotion as he approached his father after a remarkable century. Jaiswal became the 17th batter in Indian history to get a century in their Test debut in the first game of the two-match series between Rohit Sharma's team and the West Indies.
It was a very emotional moment: Yashasvi Jaiswal's father
The Jaiswal family watched in awe as their young son became the 17th Indian batter to hit a century on his debut. They were all overcome with pride and passion. The father of the Rajasthan Royals batter, Bhupendra Jaiswal, claimed in a recent interview that his son had called him at 4:30 a.m. after reaching the century mark, causing the father and son to break down in tears.
He said, "He called around 4:30 am in the morning (IST) after scoring his century (Day 2). He couldn't hold back his tears. I cried too. It was a very emotional moment. He could not talk for a long time. He was tired. He just asked me 'are you happy, father?'."
Jaiswal said after collecting his player-of-the-match award stated, "I used to think about playing for my country when I was young. Emotional moment for me but this is just the start." "A lot of people have helped me in this journey. I want to thank each and everyone...I want to thank the selectors and captain for showing faith and allowing me to express."
The 21-year-old became the third Indian batsman to get 150 runs in his maiden game for India. The Mumbai-based batter was rewarded for his impressive domestic scoring streak with a key 229-run partnership with skipper Rohit.
The debutant's impressive knock impressed captain Rohit. The southpaw, hit an amazing 171 off 387 balls, breaking multiple records. At the age of 21 years and 196 days, the India opener became the fifth-youngest batsman to score a century in their Test debut.
