Gujarat defeated Delhi (Source - Twitter)
The fifth day of the Indian T20 League 2023 saw an exciting contest between Gujarat and Delhi on Tuesday, April 4 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The David Warner-led side had a forgettable start to their campaign against Lucknow and hoped to open their winning account as they returned home after a long wait but they register their second loss of the season, losing the match against Gujarat by 6 wickets.
Talking about the match, Gujarat won the toss and opted to bowl first. Delhi's young opener Prithvi Shaw again disappointed the fans as he got out on the score of just 7 runs. Delhi expected a better performance from Mitchell Marsh but he failed, once again, and departed after scoring only 4 runs.
However, later, Warner and Sarfaraz Khan steadied the ship but they were playing at a very slow strike rate and pressure kept increasing after Warner's departure. Debutant, Abhishek Porel displayed some lusty blows but was trapped by Rashid Khan. Sarafaraz got dismissed on 30 runs off 34 deliveries. However, thanks to Axar Patel, who smashed some great hits lower down the order and helped Delhi get to over 160.
A brilliant all-round performance by Gujarat
Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan were the star bowlers for Gujarat as they both picked up 3 wickets each in their 4 overs quotas. Besides, Alzarri Joseph took 2 wickets and conceded 29 runs in 4 overs. Chasing the target, Gujarat didn't have a good start as they lost both their openers in the powerplay. Skipper, Hardik Pandya also departed early after scoring only 5 runs.
At 54/3, the game was in the balance and that's when Gujarat's young sensation, Sai Sudharsan joined hands with Vijay Shankar, who came as an impact player. The duo batted sensibly, got the odd boundaries, and kept the scoreboard ticking as they forged a fifty partnership.
After Shankar's departure, Sudharshan took the responsibility on his shoulder and played a brilliant knock of 62 runs of 48 deliveries. He was accompanied by David Miller and both took the team to a 6-wicket victory.
