According to the reports, five of the six Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s matches are likely to be moved out of Colombo due to heavy rain in the Sri Lankan capital city. It will be moved to the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, in Hambantota and is likely to host the 5 matches from September 9 to 15.

The first of the six Super 4 matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on September 6 and Pakistan will feature Bangladesh or Sri Lanka in the match after the co-host qualified for the next stage of the tournament. Lahore is going to host the final Group B match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka on Tuesday, September 5.

Rain plays spoilsport in Asia Cup

Concerns were raised when the Group A match between India and Pakistan was called off after the Indian batting innings. Rain forced no result in the high-octane match after India made 266 in their 50 overs. Pakistan did not have an opportunity to chase as rain played spoilsport in Pallekele on Saturday, September 2.

The city has seen moderate to heavy rainfall over the last few days. The city has also seen flooding in the northern parts. India and Pakistan are likely to meet in a Super 4s match on September 10 and the big-ticket match has been scheduled in Colombo.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi also expressed his views on the rainy weather and precipitation that are constantly affecting the games. He said, "How disappointing! Rain mars the greatest contest in cricket. But this was forecast. As PCB Chair, I urged the ACC to play in the UAE, but poor excuses were made to accommodate Sri Lanka. Too hot in Dubai, they said. But it was as hot when the Asia Cup was played there last time in September 2022 or when the IPL was played there in April 2014 and September 2020. Politics over sport Unforgivable!"

ACC initially felt that the weather in Colombo would improve, but even though the first match at the venue is only on September 9, they are considering the option of shifting the tournament to Hambantota.
