New Zealand has suffered lots of injury problems ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Their leading fast bowler Tim Southee had a thumb injury while taking a catch of Joe Root. He was doubtful for the World Cup but he has recovered fully and declared fit for the marquee event.

Southee had a dislocated and fractured right thumb during New Zealand's tour of England on September 16, 2023. The injury happened while he was attempting a catch during the fourth ODI at Lord's. It is a big boost for the Black Caps ahead of the World Cup.

Previously, skipper Kane Williamson, was doubtful for the World Cup after he picked up an injury during the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He is also making a comeback after the long injury he suffered and will be heading into the tournament with new confidence.

He's(Tim Southee) comfortable he'll be ready somewhere near that first or second game: Gary Stead

Kiwi head coach Gary Stead was "really hopeful" Tim Southee would be available for selection. He said, "Tim has seen a hand specialist yesterday and the key thing for him is just making sure the wound heals. We're giving him a little bit longer at home. He'll come over on Saturday and join the team."

He further added, "I had a good chat with him yesterday around that. He's comfortable he'll be ready somewhere near that first or second game. It’s a quick recovery, but part of the reason for the surgery was the idea that it will help it to recover quickly, or more quickly than what might be normal. He's had a check-in with the surgeon and hand therapists and they think there might be a little bit of pain still, but he's a pretty tough and resilient character, so we were very fortunate having him within our squad still."

New Zealand's World Cup Squad:

Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Will Young
