The much-awaited Test series between India and Australia begins at Vidarbha Cricket Stadium in Nagpur. On the first day of the game, India lost a good toss as they bundled visitors for 177 in the first innings. Spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin took eight out of ten wickets while Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj took one each.

However, at the end of the day, India were in a comfortable position and scored 77/1 in 24 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul added 77 runs for the first wicket before Rahul’s soft dismissal. Earlier, after winning the toss visitors opted to bat first on a spin-friendly track, batters failed to trouble Indian bowlers and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They surrendered in front of the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Jadeja took five wickets while Ashwin clinched three wickets and bundled Australia for 177 runs in just two sessions.

Jadeja, who was making comeback in international cricket after five months, used his variations to good effect. He was doing the variations in speed and using the turn offered by the pitch, which eventually helped him to put visitors down. Marnus Labuschange, Steven Smith, Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb, and Todd Murphy were his wickets.

Jadeja’s spell was so mesmerizing that in a press conference, Australian batter Peter Handscomb praised the spin master. While speaking to journalists Handscomb said, "Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja challenge you in different ways.” However, Handscomb also admitted that pitch tricked them and it was not a rank turner as it was looked at a day before.

“It wasn’t easy out there. It’s tough because when the pitch is playing tricks that starts to play with your mind a little bit as well. The ball that doesn’t do as much you expect to do a little bit more and that’s where you can come undone with the ball that goes straight on, rather than the big turners we saw out there as well”, said Handscomb.
