Australian veteran leg-spinner Adam Zampa recently found himself in the spotlight because of his horrible performance on the field. During the 4th match of the 5-match ODI series against South Africa, Zampa equalled the record for the worst bowling figures in ODI history against South Africa.
Zampa conceded 113 runs in his 10 overs quota and didn’t even take a single wicket. While this could have been a moment of embarrassment for any athlete, what transpired afterwards showcased the true essence of sportsmanship when former Australian bowler Mick Lewis who has also the same worst records against the Proteas in 2006 shared a message to Zampa which reads.“Welcome to the club mate.” Zampa himself shared the screenshot of the message on his social media handle.
Zampa's decision to make this message public highlighted that he had overcome his horrible performance and is looking to perform well in the future. While the talented leg-spinner may have had a tough day on the pitch, the message from the former Australian cricketer surely made his day.
Brilliant comeback by Adam Zampa in the 5th ODI match
The screenshot of Lewis' message displayed a touching gesture of support and encouragement. The batter who scored the most runs against Zampa in the contest was Heinrich Klaasen. The wicketkeeper-batter played a magnificent knock of 174 runs off just 83 balls which included 13 fours and 13 sixes.
Interestingly, Zampa learned quite quickly as in the final match of the series he picked up 3 wickets and conceded only 71 runs in his 10 overs quota. His wickets also included the dismissal of Klassen as he clean bowled him in the 24th over and took the revenge in just 2 days.
Zampa will now be seen playing in the 3-match ODI series against the Indian team starting on September 22. The series will also mark the warmup for both teams ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023 which is set to be kicked off on October 5. The 3-match ODI series will also decide which team will enter the major world tournament as the no. 1 ranked ODI team.
