Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) beat Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) by nine wickets to claim their first Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title on September 24. The team reached the finals five times, but could not have the taste of the title. Now under the captaincy of Imran Tahir, the team has finally won the title in 2023.

The South African leg-spinner broke the record of his former teammate MS Dhoni, after winning the title. He became the oldest captain to win a trophy. After the win, the GAW players sprinted onto the field along with their skipper to celebrate wildly for their first title in 11 years.

In the group stage, the Warriors were at the top of the table with eight wins and with a single loss. But all eyes were on them as previously they had failed to clinch the title many times. They dominated throughout the competition, including the playoffs as well.

Dwaine Pretorius leads the Warriors to their maiden title

Warriors won the toss and elected to field first. Their choice turned out to be great, as they bowled out TKR for just 94 runs. Batting first the Knights did not have control over the game. Their openers were back in the dugout when the team score was 35. They were reduced to 42-4 in 6.3 overs. Keacy Carty was the only batter who scored 38 runs off 45 balls. Except for him, the openers could only cross the double-figure mark. Dwaine Pretorius was the pick of the bowlers for the Warriors, as he picked up 4/26 off his four overs. Skipper Imran Tahir and Gudakesh Motie picked two wickets each.

In reply, Saim Ayub who had a great CPL season, scored his fourth half-century in the tournament. He scored 478 runs in 13 matches for the champions. Shai Hope is the only batter who has more runs than him in the tournament.

Tahir said at the post-presentation, "Beautiful (feeling). Great experience to play for this beautiful franchise and people who always support us. Everyone were sending jokes that I became captain. That actually motivated me, I wanna say thanks to those people. Thanks to our analyst Prasanna. He worked almost 20 hours a day to give us plans. Also want to thank R Ashwin from India. He said our team will win. Thank you to our owners for checking on everything we need."
