The Indian cricket team recently went through a heart-breaking loss against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final on June 11 at the Oval. With this loss, India's search for its first major world trophy since 2013 was made a little longer. However, many fans and cricket experts have made strong calls for major changes in the Indian setup, including Rohit Sharma's resignation as the longest-format leader.
It doesn't appear to be occurring any time soon, though. Several reports claim that the selector will decide to make the move following a comprehensive conversation with the captain and the coach and will take the appropriate action. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar lashed out at Indian selectors and said that they don’t have any vision, deep knowledge, and cricketing sense.
“The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen over the last six-seven years neither have the vision, deep knowledge about the game, or cricketing sense. They made Shikhar Dhawan India captain (when tours overlapped and main players were unavailable); it is where you can groom the future captain,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times.
Where is the bench strength?: Dilip Vengsarkar
However, Rohit will have another chance to prove himself as a great captain but this time in limited-overs format as ODI World Cup 2023 is set to take place in September later this year. But the selectors will again be tested as they now have multiple players to include in the squad. Vengsarkar further said that the Indian team haven’t groomed any upcoming star. He even said that earning crores of rupees in IPL shouldn’t be the only achievement for them.
“You haven’t groomed anybody. You just play as it comes. You talk about the richest cricket board in the world, where is the bench strength? Just having IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights, it should not be the only achievement,” the former chairman of selectors added.
