Bangladesh have something to cheer about in this Asia Cup 2023 as they ended their campaign on a high note. The Tigers have defeated India for the first time in 11 years in the Asia Cup history. With the result not affecting the tournament, the Men in Blue rested their key players ahead of the final against Sri Lanka. After a disastrous start, Bangladesh managed to post a respectable score. India were riding high on the back of Shubman Gill's century, but a middle-order collapse saw them lose by six runs in Colombo on Friday.

Chasing 260, India lost their skipper Rohit Sharma in the very first over for a duck. Debutant Tilak Varma also failed to make an impact as he was dismissed for just 5 runs. Gill was looking solid when wickets kept falling at the other end. The right-hander smashed 121 runs off 133 balls, but his dismissal turned the game in Bangladesh's favour. In the end, Axar Patel (42 off 34) tried his best to get his team through but Mustafizur Rahman gave a breakthrough in the 49th over and India eventually bowled out for 259 in 49.5 overs.

Shakib-Hridoy partnership changed the fortunes of Bangladesh batting innings

Earlier, after being put into bat first, Bangladesh had a disastrous start as Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur wreaked havoc in the powerplay. Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan and Anamul Haque returned to the pavilion within six overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and captain Shakib Al Hasan tried to build a partnership but Axar Patel did not give the green signal as the left-arm spinner dismissed the former to leave Bangladesh reeling at 59-4 in 13.6 overs.

However, Shakib (80 off 85 balls) held on at the other end and was well supported by Towhid Hridoy (54 off 81). The duo put on a 100-plus stand to get Bangladesh back on track. Some valuable contributions from their tail-enders - Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan - helped them to go past 250.

Speaking after the match, India skipper Rohit said: "We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup. Axar batted brilliantly but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play."
