Shubman Gill as well as Axar Patel, according to Sunil Gavaskar, are the prospects worth considering for the position of Team India's future captain. After Virat Kohli resigned as the team's captain, Rohit was selected in his place. But Rohit, who is now 36, cannot become any younger and has entered the latter stages of his great career.

"Tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain": Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar advised the Indian selection committee to "make them think" by making Axar and Shubman vice captains respectively. Once Ishan Kishan solidified his place on the national side, the veteran also chose him as one of the possibilities. He said, "If there are others, somebody like Ishan Kishan, once he cements his place in the team. He can come in the reckoning as well.”

Sunil spoke to Sports Today after the squad for the West Indies tour was announced. According to the 1983 World Cup winner, the top two possibilities to take Rohit Sharma's spot are Gill and Axar. He placed specific emphasis on Axar Patel, claiming that he has grown tremendously in recent years. He said, “One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel because Axar comes in leaps and bounds, he just gets better every match. Giving him the responsibility as vice-captain will make them think. So, these are the two candidates in my view."

The Indian Cricket Board announced the Test and ODI teams for India's trip to the West Indies on Friday, June 23. The vice-captain was announced to be Ajinkya Rahane, who completed his return to action in the WTC championship match against Australia.

Rahane should not have served as India's vice-captain during the tour, according to Gavaskar. He said, “There is nothing wrong in having him as the vice-captain, but a missed opportunity to groom a young player. At least, tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain. So, he starts to think as a future leader.”
