India posted 266 runs in their first innings against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023 after being reduced to 66/4 at one stage.

India ended up scoring 266 runs in their first innings against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 after being reduced to 66/4 at one point in time on a tricky wicket in Pallekele. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Indian team could not get a good start. A brief spell of rain in the early stages of the match meant that the Indian batters had to regroup, which did not happen. 

The Pakistani pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah created havoc on the Indian batters. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two of the star batters of India, were undone by Afridi. The left-arm pacer dismissed both by bowling them out. The two experienced batters could not fire for India, which caused big trouble for the Indian team in Pallekele. 

After the dismissal of the two senior batters, the likes of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer could not fire either. Gill scored 10 runs in 32 balls and threw away his wicket. Iyer, on his return to the side, was undone by the short delivery of Haris Rauf. The right-arm pacer bowled a fiery spell with pace and destroyed the momentum of the Indian innings. India was reduced to 66/4 in no time. 

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya play memorable innings

The last hope for India was the partnership between Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya. The two batters played arguably the innings of their lives and helped India to make a comeback in the game. The left-right combination worked well for India, as the spinners could not get settled in the middle. The two were involved in a 138-run stand for the fifth wicket, which changed the match completely. 

Kishan, after being demoted to number 5, played the innings of his life. Against an attack featuring Shaheen, Nasem, Rauf, Shadab, and Nawaz, the Southpaw played some amazing shots and scored 82 runs in 81 balls. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya scored 87 runs in 90 balls with his usual swagger. Bumrah’s cameo towards the end powered India to a total of 266 runs.
