The 3rd day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia at the Oval saw Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane celebrate his return to the Indian Test team with a heroic fifty against the Australian team. After the Indian top order collapsed in the final match against excellent Australian pace bowling, Rahane fought alone with the bat. He completed his 26th Test fifty with a boundary and a six off Pat Cummins.
Rahane continued to bat well and was nearing his century before he was caught brilliantly by Cameron Green at the gully. Australian skipper Cummins came to bowl the 2nd over of the second innings, and on the last delivery, he managed to dismiss Rahane on the score of 89 runs, which included 11 fours and 1 six. Rahne missed his well-deserved century by just 11 runs but was praised by the fans on social media for his magnificent innings.
Rahane scored 326 runs for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2023, hitting scoring at a remarkable strike of 172.49. In the process, he also broke the previous record for the fastest fifty by a member of the Chennai Super Kings, achieving it against the Mumbai Indians in just 19 balls. Beyond his T20 performance, Rahane's background and present form allowed him to replace the injured Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav in the starting XI.
He showed a lot to the dressing room: Sourav Ganguly
Meanwhile, former legendary Indian captain and the Indian Cricket Board president Sourav Ganguly praised Rahane for making a triumphant return to the Indian Test team after the veteran batter played a superb inning in a crucial circumstance for the team.
"He showed a lot to the dressing room that if you apply and if you have a little bit of luck which India have, you will be able to bat on this pitch, a lot of credit to Rahane, he was magnificent and Shardul Thakur as well. He has batted well for India. It's a good fight for India," Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by India Today.
