India struggled to a 40-run defeat to Bangladesh in the first ODI, their first in the 50-over format against the underdogs, at Mirpur on Sunday. Amanjot Kaur, who chose to bowl, made a brilliant ODI debut, taking four wickets for 31 runs as Bangladesh were limited to 152 in 43 overs.

However, chasing a manageable total, India succumbed with the bat, being bowled out for 113 in 35.5 overs. Deepti Sharma led the way for India with a 40-ball 20. Marufa Akter took four wickets for Bangladesh, allowing 29 runs.

Indian batters' poor show

Earlier, the 23-year-old Amanjot dismissed opener Murshida Khatun, Fargana Hoque, skipper Nigar Sultana, and Rabeya Khan as Bangladesh laboured in the 44-overs-a-side contest. Bangladesh bowlers struck early, dismissing star opener Smriti Mandhana in the third over. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur failed to make an impression, scoring 5 runs off 5 balls before being caught by Nahida Akter.

Harmanpreet Kaur stated, "We didn't take responsibility and bat well. In bowling also, we were not up to the mark. Sometimes some bowlers bowl very well, overall we are not batting up to the mark and not bowling according to our strengths. We have done well in ODI cricket and we have to back ourselves."

Nigar Sultana stated, "I think we were 30-40 runs short. The lower-order batters gave us some scores. All credit to the bowlers, they assessed the wicket well. Wonderful effort from the crowd, they boosted the team. The thing was that we wanted to get early wickets. Our plan and execution worked for us. I am very much happy that I have every strength in the team. (On Marufa Akter) She is talented, she is young and she is fast. She knows her strength and doesn't think too much."

The second ODI match of the series will be held on 19th July followed by the third one on 22nd July. India had earlier clinched the T20I series against the hosts by a 2-1 lead. This is Bangladesh's first victory against India.
