At the end of each cricket match, the title of ‘Player of the Match’ is awarded to the player who performed the best in the game, usually to someone on the winning side. More often than not, the decision is pretty clear and met with widespread approval.

Sometimes, the decision is not as clear-cut, with the winning side having multiple players that performed well. On rare occasions, the award can even be given to a player on the losing side who was just head and shoulders above the rest of the players on the field. As such, there are lots of scenarios that can make adjudging the winner of this award a real head-scratcher.

With that in mind, former Indian cricketer and now broadcaster Aakash Chopra decided to shed some light on the process of how the winner of the Player of the Match award in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is actually chosen.

Taking to Twitter, Chopra revealed that only one commentator from the English World Feed team gets nominated to be the adjudicator for every game, and the choice always comes down to which way that person happens to be leaning at the end of the game.

This discussion arose at the end of an unbelievable IPL clash between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians on Friday, May 12, at the Wankhede Stadium. It was Mumbai that came out on top, riding on the back of Suryakumar Yadav’s maiden IPL ton - a spectacular innings of 103* from 49 balls laced with 11 fours and six sixes. It was the Mumbai batter who took home the Player of the Match award as his side emerged victorious by 27 runs.

However, some fans argued the case of Gujarat Titans spinner Rashid Khan, who delivered an all-round performances for the ages. While bowling, the Afghan leg-spinner took 4/30 in his four overs, running through the Mumbai top order.

In the second innings, with his side in disarray, Rashid arrived at the crease and tonked the Mumbai bowlers to all parts of the ground. He ended up unbeaten on 79 off just 32 balls, having hit three fours and 10 sixes in his remarkable knock.

Despite not being able to get Gujarat over the finish line, a number of fans were of the opinion that Rashid’s all-round showing was worthy of receiving the Player of the Match over Suryakumar Yadav, despite the latter’s heroics with the bat.
