England opening batter Jason Roy's poor form continued on Saturday, November 19, when he was dismissed for a second-ball duck in the second One-Day International against Australia. The visitors were desperate for a strong start as they chased a score of 281 on a slowish surface at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Mitchell Starc, on the other hand, had other plans with the new ball in hand. The left-arm seamer was at his lethal best in the first over, reducing England to 2-2 including the wicket of Jason Roy. The right-handed batter, who was dropped from the T20 squad in favour of Alex Hales, received a reprieve in the form of an ODI call-up against Australia. He scored six runs in the series opener at Adelaide Oval but did not add to his total after a two-ball duck in the must-win game in Sydney.
Starc's second delivery was a little short and wide, but Roy's luck ensured that the ball made contact with the glove before being pouched by Alex Carey behind the stumps.
In the first innings, half-centuries from Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Marcus Stoinis helped the Kangaroos reach 280/8 in 50 overs. Smith was Australia's best batter, scoring 94 runs in 114 deliveries.
Australia currently holds a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. A victory here seals the deal for the home team. England, on the other hand, will look to win here in order to stay in the competition. The T20I leg of the series was played prior to the start of the 20-20 World Cup, which England easily won 2-0.
In the meantime, The Twitterati declared the end of Roy's stint in national colours and now expects Hales to be involved in the 50-over format as well. "Jason Roy scored exactly what we all expected, but just took one extra ball for it," an angry fan wrote. "Jason Roy losing his ODI spot to Hales too?" another fan questioned.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Jason Roy
Jason Roy is done as an international cricketer sadly. He was fundamental in the 2019 World Cup win but his decline has been astonishingly fast. A shame too. He was one of my favourite cricketers in that England side

It’s getting to a point now where I actually have sympathy for Jason Roy and I no longer blame him, he needs time away from the England set up as he’s a player playing with absolutely zero confidence
