With the 2023 World Cup just around the corner, former cricketers and pundits are busy making their predictions and players to watch out for in the marquee event. Former South African cricketer Dale Steyn recently picked his finalists for the tournament and has now named five fast bowlers who can set the mega stage on fire.

Steyn's five picks are India's Mohammad Siraj, Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada, Pakistan pace sensation Shaheen Saa Afridi, New Zealand left-arm seamer Trent Boult and England speedster Mark Wood. The legendary fast bowler also predicted that Boult is likely to finish as the leading wicket-taker in the premier 50-over tournament.

However, fans were not impressed with Steyn's decision to drop India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and Australia's left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, who is currently fifth in the list of leading wicket-takers in ODI World Cup history. Speaking in a video released on the Cricket Governing Body's social media handle, the 40-year-old also shared his thoughts on the selected five pacers.

Check out what Dale Steyn had to say about his picks

Steyn said of Siraj, currently the world's No. 1 ODI bowler: "(He) swings the ball upfront, knock over the big batters, key player for India.” Meanwhile, Steyn believes that Rabada will have the upper hand due to his familiarity with Indian conditions. “Big bounce, lots of pace, familiar with Indian conditions,” he said.

While talking about Afridi, Steyn cheekily warned India captain Rohit Sharma to be wary of his left-arm pace threat. He pointed out Boult's swinging prowess and made a big prediction that he would become a leading wicket-taker. “Boult swings the ball upfront for New Zealand, a big wicket-taker. I think he is going to be the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup," he said.

England's Mark Wood was the last one to feature in Steyn's list. Describing him as the fear factor, the former right-arm pacer said: “Mark Wood has extreme pace. I think he’s going to take a lot of wickets for England. His fear factor, his pace alone is going to give him tons of wickets."

The 2023 ODI World Cup will kick off when the defending champions take on runners-up New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5.
