India's wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul has been picked in the 17-men squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. He has been away from cricket for a long time due to an injury he picked up during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
In a press conference, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar informed the media that Rahul has a bit niggle and assured that he might play in the second match of the Asia Cup. India has two wicketkeeping backups, Sanju Samson has been named as a travelling reserve and Ishan Kishan might be the second-choice wicketkeeper if Rahul is not fully fit.
KL Rahul starts wicketkeeping ahead of the Asia Cup
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have spent the last few months in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy. Both Iyer and Rahul have been named to the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023 in order to strengthen India's middle order.
Rahul is expected to be fit for India's first game against Pakistan on September 2 at Pallekele Stadium in Kandy. His practice session indicates that he has recovered from his injury. He still has over a week to prepare for the continental tournament.
Today, Rahul has started practising wicketkeeping in the ongoing Indian team camp for the Asia Cup 2023 at Alur in Karnataka. According to news reports, Rahul began his keeping preparations on Friday and started his practice with conditioning coaches as well.
With the World Cup less than two months away, the Men in Blue will be hoping that the Karnataka-born batter does not pick up any injury and becomes fully fit before the mega event. His last Test match for India was against Australia in February 2017, while his last ODI match was against Australia in March 2023.
Due to a mid-season injury, he was unable to play in all of the IPL 2023 matches. If Rahul is unable to play, Ishan will fill in as the wicket-keeper batter. The question then becomes whether Ishan will bat at No. 5 or replace Gill as an opener.
