Faf Du Plessis gave his opinion on India's campaign in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023. The former South African captain spoke about India's campaign in the tournament and compared that with theirs in 2015, where Proteas were treated as one of the favourites to win. Yet, SA could not win the semifinal of the tournament. Faf took the readers back to the memory lane.
In the semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2015, New Zealand defeated SA when 5 runs were needed in the last 2 balls. In the process, NZ entered their first-ever ODI World Cup final. On the other hand, it was a heartbreak for South Africa, who played an amazing brand of cricket in the tournament till then. India had a similar tournament in 2023, where they won all their matches till the final in the tournament.
Speaking about India's campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023, Faf felt that losses like it are not easy to overcome. "That is a big challenge. I remember going through a similar experience as a cricketer when we went through the highs and lows of the 2015 World Cup. The heartache that you have to deal with takes a bit of time and it is a bit like breaking up with a girlfriend. You cannot just get over it straight away," said Faf.
'India were so amazing in the way they played in this World Cup' - Faf Du Plessis
Faf felt that it is not easy to overcome such losses where one would be deemed favourites and have enough to win the tournament but end up losing it. Faf compared the pain of losing the tournament to similar pain one endures after losing a girlfriend. The RCB captain felt that India played amazing cricket in the tournament and was the team to win the tournament.
"India were so amazing in the way they played in this World Cup. They were unbelievable the way they went about their business. They will be feeling in a similar way and they will be heartbroken. That was their World Cup to win," said Faf.
