Mohammed Shami's name has been recommended for Arjuna Award 2023. It is one of the most prestigious awards in Indian sports and is awarded to athletes from different sports who excel at the highest level. Shami has been a regular in the Indian team for more than 10 years now. In this period, the star pacer has claimed more than 400 wickets in international cricket.
In Test cricket, Shami has claimed more than 200 wickets. In ODIs, Shami has claimed about 192 wickets. It is his performance in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023 that has given him recognition among the fans and cricket fraternity. The star bowler got his nomination for the award due to his brilliant bowling in the tournament. Shami will be one of the most deserving athletes to be awarded.
Shami was not even in the starting XI due to the team combination. The likes of Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj were preferred over him in the playing XI. But the unfortunate injury of Hardik Pandya came as a blessing in disguise for the Indian team. It forced the home side to strengthen their bowling attack. As a result, Shami made it to the Indian side.
Sensational performance in ODI World Cup 2023
The rest as they say is history. In just 7 games in the tournament, the star pacer claimed a whopping 24 wickets at an average of around 12, at an economy of just over 5, including three five-wicket hauls and a four-wicket haul. Against New Zealand, Shami claimed 2 fifers, including a 7/57 in the semifinal of the tournament. It was one of the best spells by a bowler in the history of the tournament.
Against New Zealand, he claimed a fifer in the group stage. Likewise, he claimed a fifer against Sri Lanka as well. Against England, Shami claimed a 4-wicket haul, which saw one of the best spells of seam bowling at the highest stage in the World Cup. The seam bowler ended the tournament as the highest wicket-taker.
