The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 retention window has closed and all 10 teams have released and retained the players. The trading window is open till 12 December and some more trades can be done during this period. The main light of the recent trading window was the transfer of Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans (GT) to Mumbai Indias (MI) has been the most talked about. Pandya was traded back to MI where he started his IPL career for an all-cash deal of 15 crore INR.
The star all-rounder was initially retained by the GT but as they released Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for an amount of 17.5 crore INR, they snatched in Pandya. But Pandya's move to MI has been in danger as the player might get banned from IPL. As per how the trading window works before the IPL auction, the franchises can swap players from other franchises. They reveal a list of released and retained players after the deal is completed.
The released players are auctioned. The released players' salaries are re-added to the franchise's purse, which they use to bid on desired players in the IPL auction. There are two kinds of trade agreements. The first is a player transfer between clubs, while the second is a cash purchase of a player.
It is wrong to directly contact players: CEO Gujarat Titans
Previously in 2010, Ravindra Jadeja was banned for such similar instances as he refused to sign a contract with Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the 2011 IPL as he was then in talks with MI, this was against the rules and regulations of the IPL and he was banned for a year and fined a penalty.
Former KKR director Joy Bhattacharya had also raised the issue. There has been no update of the same from the Indian Cricket Board, IPL, or any authority regarding this. It will be interesting to see what will be the future of Hardik in the upcoming IPL. The CEO of Gujarat Titans was unhappy with the way Hardik went to Mumbai Indians as he believed. He said, "It is wrong to directly contact players for IPL trade."
