Young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal who ended Day 1 with 179 runs to his name, has managed to convert his sensational knock into a double-century, his first in the longest format of the game. Batting with solid defence and calculated aggression, the left-hander stood tall when the rest of the batteries faltered.
Jaiswal, who had a dream debut with a century against West Indies last year, began cautiously against the English attack. He respected the good spell bowled by James Anderson early on, showcasing his solid technique and patience. With time, he got into his groove and unleashed his sublime strokeplay. He played some delightful shots which left spectators, viewers and fans in absolute awe.
Vizag crowd enthralled!
He was involved in multiple partnerships but the biggest of the lot was a 100-run stand that he shared with fellow Mumbai batter, Shreyas Iyer. As such, he held the innings together which is a huge achievement considering that he is still so young, both by age and experience.
Today, he got to his double-century courtesy of a sweep off Shoaib Bashir who bowled a full-toss which made things a little easier for the southpaw. The Visakhapatnam crowd erupted in jubilation, acknowledging the importance and class of the innings. His knock, a magnificent unbeaten 209 off 290 deliveries, which was laced with 19 fours and 7 sixes, came to an end after a few overs when he tried to slog a James Anderson delivery only to find Jonny Bairstow in the deep. He walked off to a standing ovation from the crowd which was left mesmerized. Jaiswal's innings have allowed India to post a formidable total of 396 in the first innings and it is now up to the bowlers to restrict the visitors.
Here's how 'netizens' reacted to his magnificent effort:
He's done it 200 for Jaiswal. First in test cricket. Played with intent, played with class. Becomes the youngest Indian to score a 200. Held this innings together and keeps going keeps going.
