Updated WTC points table

India have lost the 1st Test against South Africa by an innings and 32 runs at the Supersport Park, Centurion on Thursday. The dream of winning a test series in South African soil is still a dream for the Men in Blue. Rohit Sharma's side has been penalised India for the slow over rate in the Centurion Test. This is news that will hurt the side after the loss.

The Cricket Governing Body, as a punishment, has been fined 10 per cent of their match fee and two World Test Championship (WTC) points were docked. The on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Langton Rusere, third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Stephen Harris levelled the changes, and match referee Chris Broad imposed the fine.

It has been observed that India were two overs short of target after time allowances were taken into consideration. This was the host's first match in this WTC cycle as they are now in the top of the points table with 12 points and a PCT of 100%. India defeated West Indies 1-0 in their only previous series (two-match) in the cycle. With this loss, India have slipped down to the fifth spot with 16 points and a PCT of 44.44%.

WTC points table after India's loss

New Zealand and Bangladesh met in a two-match Test series which ended in a 1-1 draw. This series opened their account in the WTC 2023-25 cycle. Both teams have won one each game and have registered 12 points each with the same PCT of 50%. Hence, both NZ and Bangladesh are in third position. Australia after winning the second test match against Pakistan, the reigning WTC champions are currently in the 6th position and the Men in Greenside are in the second position with 61.11%.

England are next in the 8th position after a 2-2 draw in the Ashes in this WTC cycle. However, they were docked 19 WTC points for over-rate offences in the series. With lot of matches left in the cycle, it will be interesting to watch which two teams qualify for the finals.
