Sri Lanka Cricket suspended by Cricket Governing Body

The Cricket Governing Body has suspended the membership of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Board with immediate effect. Nothing is going right at the moment for Lankan Cricket as previously they have dissolved all the members of the board. There have been obligations that have been breached by the board several times. On Friday, the Board had a meeting online to discuss the SLC situation. It has been suspected that the Board was concerned about the Sri Lankan government's influence in many aspects of the SLC, from governance to financial and even national team concerns.

Sri Lanka's sports minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, fired the SLC board on Monday and appointed an interim committee chaired by Arjuna Ranatunga. After that, the courts restored the board by issuing a 14-day stay order. The Islanders have performed poorly in the ODI World Cup 2023. They have won only two games out of 9 and sitting at the bottom of the table.

As per the nation's sports law, which has been in place since 1973, Sri Lanka's sports minister has also had the role of dissolving all Sri Lankan national teams.

The Cricket Governing Body's, Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations: Cricket Governing Body

In a statement Cricket Governing Body, "The Cricket Governing Body's, Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka. The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the Board in due course. Cricket Governing Body has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket's membership with immediate effect."

Sri Lanka's chief selector, Pramodaya Wickramasinghe had earlier alleged "outside conspiracy” over the side's dismal World Cup campaign. Soon after landing at the airport, Wickramasinghe, a member of the winning team in the 1996 edition of the tournament, said, "Give me two days to disclose everything about it. This was the result of a conspiracy from outside."
