Tilak Varma, the Mumbai Indians superstar has formally entered the major leagues. After a very good start to the 2022 season, he had an incredibly spectacular IPL 2023, scoring 343 runs with an average of almost 43 as well as a strike rate of 164.11. After a successful tenure with India A, it was only a question of time until he smashed the national team's door firmly.

It, therefore, came as no surprise when Ajit Agarkar, the newly-elected head of the selection group, settled down to choose a 15-man team to represent India in the forthcoming five-match T20I series versus the Windies that will begin on August 3.

“Just want to do well and win matches for my team”: Tilak Varma

In a conversation with Times of India, the 20-year-old spoke about his maiden Indian call-up and his focus currently. He said, “I am looking forward to the tour as it has been one of my dreams to play for the country. Right now, I am focusing on the Duleep Trophy and just want to do well and win matches for my team. But, yeah, I am really looking forward to being part of the Indian team on the tour to the West Indies. It is a great opportunity to further my dreams."

The Mumbai Indians superstar then spoke about what he did the most to get selected and how the domestic season and IPL helped him get to the stage he is at right now. He said, “Good performances in the domestic tournaments and the IPL does help a player in getting selected. IPL is a big tournament and doing well there definitely helped me. When I was injured, I was really thinking and focusing on the process. It was a grind as I kept the training and practice going. I didn’t lose my confidence as I was doing the basics right – practice and strength training etc. I was confident of doing well in any tournament and it helped me to go directly into the IPL and do well.”

Finally, the young sensation spoke about his childhood dream. He said, “My childhood dream is to win the World Cup for India and hopefully it comes true soon. But right now, my focus is on the matches on hand like the Duleep Trophy and other games.”
