England are facing a lot of criticism after losing the 1st Test of the Ashes 2023 by 2 wickets at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday. Many fans and cricket experts claim that England’s ‘Bazball’ philosophy backfired and their complacency is the biggest reason behind their loss.

There was a big difference between England's and Australia’s approach to playing the game as the Australian team were quite defensive which eventually helped them to last in the game. Meanwhile, former Australian captain Tim Paine has backed the Australian team for believing in their playing style.

“I thought it was pretty much as I expected to be honest. I think Australia were always going to set slightly what you can call defensive fields if you like. I think they were no different really to Ben Stokes. He and England make some funky fields and all of a sudden it's genius. Australia put a couple of people on the fence and all of a sudden it's defensive. I think there were some clear strategies from both sides, whether it was attack or defense.” Paine was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Everyone was left entertained: Brendon McCullum

However, England’s head coach Brendon McCullum supported Ben Stokes’ decision of declaring the innings on 393 runs in the first innings and said that we always try to find a way to win the match and put the opposition team under pressure. McCullum also said that he’d be surprised if someone disagree about their approach as they entertained many fans.

"We always want to try and take the game forward, we want to try and seize opportunities where we think we can put opposition teams under pressure. We firmly believe, the skipper and I, that this gives us our greatest chance. I would be very surprised if there were too many people who disagree with how we go about playing because everyone was left entertained.” McCullum was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
