Australia defeated England in the 2nd Ashes 2023 Test at the Lord’s by 43 runs on July 2. The Australian team have now taken a 2-0 lead over the English side and a win in the 3rd Test, which will be played at Headingley on July 6, will seal the iconic Ashes series for the Kangaroos. However, what caught the most attention during the 2nd Test was England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow’s bizarre dismissal.

The incident happened on the last delivery of the 52nd over when Bairstow thought he had secured his ground by tapping his bat behind the crease. But Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey displayed a brilliant presence of mind and run Bairstow out, who carelessly went out of the crease after ducking a bouncer.

The decision was referred to third umpire Marais Erasmus, who ruled Bairstow had been stumped, with England getting reduced to 193-6. After the dismissal, the Lord’s crowd started booing Carey for not showing the spirit of cricket. On the next, day multiple English newspapers also came with cheeky headlines, calling the Australian team a cheater.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who often remains in headlines for his controversial statements, has once again sparked another controversy. Gambhir questioned the Australian team with a cryptic tweet and lashed out at them for the dismissal.

"Hey sledgers... Does spirit of the game logic apply to you or is it just for Indians?" Gambhir tweeted.

Interestingly, a similar incident took place during a Test Match between India and England in 2011 at Trent Bridge. Former England cricketer Ian Bell was casually running between the wickets as he thought that the shot he played went for the four but Praveen Kumar, who was at the boundary line, somehow saved it and Bell wasn’t aware of this.

Praveen threw the ball towards the former legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni who collected the ball and dispatched the bails after which the 3rd umpire gave Bell out. However, in the next session, Bell once again came to bat as Dhoni withdrew the appeal and asked the batter to play again.
