Ever since breaking in to the Indian national team in 2014 on the back of an impressive showing in the Indian Premier League, Axar Patel's career has been on an upward trajectory.
The Gujarat all-rounder has gone from strength to strength, establishing himself first as an effective left-arm spinner and, subsequently, as an extremely reliable lower-order batter. Dependable in the field as well, Axar has become a mainstay in all three formats for India and has carried his great form into the IPL this season as well.
Despite his side, Delhi Capitals, not having a great start in the tournament, Axar has been impressing on a personal level. He did the same in today's match against the Chennai Super Kings, a crucial tie with respect to his side's future in this season's tournament.Β
Brought on to bowl in the powerplay, he picked up a wicket off his first ball, trapping Devon Conway leg before in the fifth over. He continued to keep the Chennai batters in check throughout, following up the dismissal of Conway with the wicket of fellow opener Ruturaj Gaikwad in the sixth over.
Patel finished the innings with impressive figures of 2/27 in his four overs, maintaining an economy rate of 6.75. He contributed in the field as well, taking the crucial catch of Ravindra Jadeja in the final over as Chennai looked to step on the gas.
This continued his trend of impressive performances throughout the tournament. The all-rounder (as he has earned the right to be called) has taken nine wickets in 11 matches, all while keeping the shackles on opposition batters. Often deployed in the power play, his economy rate of 6.81 demonstrates his excellent control of the ball.
Axar's contribution with the bat has been equally impressive, contributing 246 runs in 10 innings before today's match against the Chennai Super Kings. This includes his maiden IPL half-century, while his average of 35.14 at a strike rate of 135.91 has been invaluable lower down the order. It is no surprise that he has been at the crease on multiple occasions when the winning runs have been scored in the matches Delhi have won.
Here's a look at how fans reacted to Axar's sensational numbers in IPL 2023:
