After India’s disappointing defeat at the hands of England in the semi-finals of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup, former India international Harbhajan Singh wants the management to make some amendments and make room for a new T20I captain and coach for the time to come.
Rahul Dravid, who’s currently in charge of the Indian team has done reasonably well in bilateral tournaments but when it comes to any major tournaments, the legendary cricketer has failed to give India the necessary success. The off-spinner also mentioned that he understands Dravid’s role in the squad but wants someone young who understands the format better than the current head coach.
“It’s not just the captain. If you can bring someone who has just retired from T20 cricket recently, someone who understands the format. You know, with all due respect to Rahul Dravid, he was my colleague and we played a lot of cricket together, he has a great brain,” the former cricketer said while talking to India Today.
For captaincy, Hardik Pandya is my choice: Harbhajan Singh
“But I think if you don’t want to remove Dravid from T20I as a coach then help him with someone who has recently retired. Someone like Ashish Nehra who has got a great cricketing brain. Look what he has done there at Gujarat Titans. It will also encourage the young guys with what Ashish will bring into the team. It could also be anyone, who just retired,” he added.
Hardik Pandya, who won the Indian T20 League in his very season as the captain is Harbajhan Singh’s best choice for the next Indian captain in the shortest format of the game. Pandya, who played some brilliant cricket against England in the semi-final couldn’t inspire the team with the ball as the Men in Blue lost the match by 10 wickets.
“For captaincy, Hardik Pandya is my choice. There is no better choice. He is the best player in the team and you need more people like him in the team,” the former cricketer added.
