Indian batters Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane entered the ground at the Oval with the hope to continue their outstanding batting display while chasing a monumental total of 444 runs on Day 5 in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final. Both batters ended the 4th day with a brilliant 71-run stand for the 4th wicket after another horrible batting performance from the top-order batters.

Meanwhile, Kohli couldn’t contain his patience on the 5th day and departed after scoring 49 runs, courtesy of a brilliant catch by Steve Smith at the slips. Scott Boland bowled the delivery outside off stump and Kohli went for a drive and edged it behind the stumps. With this wicket, Australia now have a higher chance to pin India down.

Brilliant bowling performance by Australia

On the fourth day, Australia declared their second innings with a total of 270 runs for eight wickets. The Men in Blue were then given a lofty 444-run target to reach in order to win this historic Test. But both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made a strong first impression. However, after scoring 18 runs off 19 balls, Gill departed.

Then, Rohit had some nice strokes and looked good. However, after hitting seven fours and one six, and scoring 43 runs off of 60 balls, he was eventually dismissed by Nathan Lyon. After hitting 27 runs off of 47 balls, Cheteshwar Pujara once again let his team and supporters down by being struck out.

The Men in Blue did not lose any more wickets on Day 4 after that, thanks to Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane's efforts. They scored 71 runs together without being defeated to end the day. Rahane had 20* runs, while Kohli had 44* runs. Fans anticipated seeing them score cleanly once more in the first session. However, Kohli was unsuccessful as India lost their fourth wicket with 179 runs remaining in the 47th over.
