The Hyderabad-based franchise were a complete flop in the last two Indian T20 League seasons. They were ranked eighth in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The franchise last won the title in 2016. The franchise has now come up with lots of changes and on Thursday, Hyderabad’s officials announced that South African all-rounder Aiden Markram will lead the team in the upcoming season.
Markram talked about Mayank Agarwal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and said that he played under Agarwal when they were in Punjab which can be useful for the team but Bhuvneshwar also has the experience which is unreplaceable.
However, now, it will be up to Markram to bring Hyderabad back on the winning track. Looking at his captaincy record, it can be said that he has the ability to guide the team to victory.
Markram responded to a query where he was asked to pick his deputy for the upcoming season of the IPL 2023.
“That's a tough one. I played under Mayank at Punjab. He and I got on really well. And if you look at the amount of experience someone like Bhuvi has, it is almost unreplaceable. So, to pick one would be difficult right now but I think both of them would nail it certainly,” Markram told Hindustan Times.

Markram is just 28 years old. He has not been so effective in Tests and ODIs, but in T20s, he has performed really well. In his T20I career, he has scored 879 runs in 31 matches so far at an average of 38 and a strike rate of 148. Even in the cash-rich league, his average only got better with time (40.54). Meanwhile, Markram was asked which Indian player he would like to see play his trade in SA20, and the 28-year-old batter took MS Dhoni’s name.
“That's a very difficult one. To be honest with you, someone like MS (Dhoni) would be great to have in the camp. Just for guys to be able to learn, he has got all the knowledge, he has seen everything this game has produced for our local players in South Africa to be able to sponge up something like that I suppose would be great. So, yeah that's the one player that comes to my mind firstly, but there will be a lot of players I think that would be discussed for sure,” Markram added.
