UFC middleweight fighter Driscus du Plessis (19-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will be fighting the former UFC champion Robert Whittaker (24-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC) in Las Vegas at UFC 290 on July 8. It is expected to be a great fight as du Plessis has a 5-match unbeaten streak in UFC and on the other hand, Whittaker has a lot of experience being inside the octagon with many middleweight greats.
However, many UFC stars and MMA experts believe that du Plessis deserved a direct title shot against the UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. But du Plessis has a different opinion on that as he believes that he is here to fight and entertain the fans and for that, he can fight anyone.
“A lot of people are saying it’s not the smartest move to fight Whittaker and 100 percent, I agree with that. I agree it’s not the smart move, but I’m not here to be smart. Otherwise, I would’ve stayed in school and finished my studies, gone to work at a bank, worn a suit to work every day, and do some corporate life. But that’s not the life I chose. I chose to be a warrior, to be an entertainer, and at the end of the day, I’m a fighter. And that’s what I do: I fight.” Du Plessis was quoted as saying by MMA Junkie.
I want to deserve my title shot: Driscus du Plessis
Du Plessis said that beating Whittaker will make him more deserving of the title shot and also boosts his confidence when he will face the ‘Last Styleblender’. However, it’d be interesting to see if he will be able to do whatever he is saying now or if Whittaker will grab another chance to fight Adesanya.
“I don’t want to get that title shot based on some hype created by, I don’t even know what, some guy who has the title who’s behaving like a little child and overreacting and now the fight is happening because of that. I want to deserve my title shot. I don’t want to be handed a title shot. I’m going to deserve that belt, and that’s why I wanted that Whittaker fight.” Du Plessis said.
