India’s disappointing 20-20 World Cup campaign has put Rohit Sharma in the line of fire of everyone’s questions. There has been a growing concern about Sharma’s captaincy and his inability to motivate players into winning a multi-team event.
Hardik Pandya has been backed by the board in absence of Sharma’s services. The right-arm all-rounder captioned India’s team to a series win against New Zealand.
Pandya shot into contention after a sensational performance in the Indian T20 League 2022 wherein he took debutants Gujarat to a title win in the first season itself. He impressed all with his leadership qualities and hence many former players are backing the Gujarat cricketer to lead the Indian side in T20Is.
Former Team India player Harbhajan Singh has also shared his opinion on the topic saying that Pandya is the right option.
“If it happens, Hardik is the right option,” he said. Earlier, Harbhajan has also suggested Ashish Nehra’s name for team India’s next coach for the shortest format.
“In T20 format you can have someone like Ashish Nehra who recently retired from the game. He knows this better than, with all due respect to Rahul, we have played together for so many years, he has vast knowledge but this is a tricky format.
Harbhajan opined that a player who has recently played the game would be more capable of understanding the changing demands of T20 cricket.
“Someone who has played the game more recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I am not saying you remove Rahul from T20. Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup,” Harbhajan Singh told PTI.
