In the first T20I of the five-match series, India and Australia locked horns at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Vishakhapatnam. In the match, the home team won the toss and elected to bowl first. As suggested by the stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Dew was about to make an impact. Meanwhile, the visitors had a poor start as Matthew Short (13) was cleaned up by Ravi Bishnoi.

At 31/1, the likes of former skipper Steve Smith and Josh Inglis put together 130 runs for the second wicket. The former batted at a strike rate of 126.82 during his innings of 52 off 41 balls, Inglis scored his maiden hundred and ended with 110 off 50 balls. In the end, Tim David (19*) played a cameo and the team ended with 208/3. For India, bowlers didn't have the best of the days.

The home team had a poor start with Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) getting run out without playing a ball. On the other hand, Yashasvi Jaiswal (21) started well but his innings ended due to one-shot too many against Short. At 22/2, the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan put together 112 runs to bring a fightback. The latter scored 58 off 39 balls including two fours and five sixes. On the other hand, Yadav scored 80 off 42 balls including nine fours and four sixes.

After this, the team lost a few more wickets than they would have liked. However, they had reached a point of not losing a game with Rinku Singh (22*) staying not out till the end. In the end, the team won the game by two wickets, and on the last ball of the innings, Sean Abbott bowled a no-ball.
