Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of the finest finger spinners of this generation. The right-arm off-spinner has been one of the best bowlers for India in the red-ball format. The 37-year-old still needs one wicket to become the first Indian off-spinner and second, after Anil Kumble to take 500 Test wickets in international cricket. Ashwin was playing his 97th Test as the spinner and got close to achieving the milestone by completing 499 Test wickets during the 2nd Test against England in Visakhapatnam. However, the last wicket of the Test was picked by Jasprit Bumrah making Ashwin wait more for the milestone.

The Indian off-spinner is yet to achieve the feat and become only the second bowler after Sri Lanka’s Muttaiah Muralidaran to get to the feat in less than 100 Tests. Ashwin, who has been the fastest Indian to reach 50, 100, 150, 200, 350, 400 and 450 Test wickets, is also the fastest in the world to reach 250 and 300 Test wickets. The veteran spinner picked 50 Test wickets in nine matches, 100 in 18, 150 in 29, and 200 in 37.

The Tamil Nadu-born spinner made a world record by taking 250 wickets in 45 matches and 300 wickets in 54 matches. He reached 350 Test wickets in 66 Tests, then took 11 more matches to reach 400 wickets in only his 77th Test, and finally 450 wickets in his 89th Test.

Ravichandran Ashwin stands at 499

He has been a sensational bowler for the side in the traditional format of the game at home as well as in overseas conditions. Ashwin will become the third off-spinner after Murali and Nathan Lyon to pick 500 wickets. The bowling all-rounder for India has scored 1000 runs against the Three Lions.

The veteran spinner has 5 hundreds to his name and 14 half-centuries. He also has the second most wickets against the English Lions with 98 to his name in the traditional format of the game. The visitors are struggling while chasing a target of 399 runs as they have won the game and the home side and level the series.
