Tim Southee has been a sensational performer with the ball in all formats of the game for New Zealand. He is in doubt for the World Cup after breaking a bone of his right thumb in the fourth ODI against England. Southee sustained the injury while attempting to take a catch in the 14th over of England’s innings.
The veteran pacer has been a key for the Kiwi's success in recent years. He has been added to the provisional 15-men squad for the World Cup, in India. With his experience in India, the Black Caps will surely miss his service if he cannot make it to the World Cup.
A timeline for his recovery will be established tomorrow when he undergoes further assessment: New Zealand Cricket
He did not participate further in New Zealand’s 100-run defeat after leaving the pitch for a scan. New Zealand Cricket said, "A timeline for his recovery will be established tomorrow when he undergoes further assessment." The two-time runners-up will be hoping that further evaluation will allow Tim Southee to preserve his spot in the 15-man squad for what will be his fourth ODI World Cup.
The Kiwis lost the series against the defending champions 3-1. They won the first match of the series but the hosts came back and played like defending champions. Dawid Malan became the Player of the Series. Ben Stokes reversed his ODI retirement came back and scored brilliantly in two innings 182 and 59 runs respectively.
The Kiwi squad will be a second-string team led by Lockie Ferguson. After that, New Zealand will be in action in the opening game of the Cricket World Cup 2023. They will face England in Ahmedabad in the tournament opener. With not much time left before the start of the tournament, they have suffered a serious blow.
Kane Williamson who was injured has returned to the squad and doing rehab with the team. He has been named as the skipper for the squad that will be participating in the World Cup.
