Former India vice-captain KL Rahul is racing against time to get fit not just for the Asia Cup 2023 but also for the ODI World Cup 2023. He got injured during the IPL 2023 and went through hip surgery in London. After a while, the right-hander started his rehab and was recently reported to make a comeback during the continental tournament. However, there is no guarantee that the Lucknow Super Giants skipper will make his comeback for these tournaments.
Not to forget, during the ODI series between West Indies and India, India head coach Rahul Dravid suggested looking for backups of Shreyas Iyer and KL for these tournaments. Dravid said that the team is looking to be prepared if the likes of Iyer and KL aren't available. Meanwhile, T20 World Cup 2007 winner, RP Singh has suggested that Ishan Kishan could bat at number five in place of KL.
"It doesn't work out with just one chance. According to me, Ishan should play at No. 5 if you see him at No. 5 for the (ODI) World Cup. If KL Rahul is unavailable in the future, Ishan Kishan is his backup option," Singh said during a conversation with JioCinema.
Notably, the Mumbai Indians player has been opening the batting in ODIs and T20Is. He did batter in the middle-order during India's home series against New Zealand early this year. Meanwhile, Singh added that Kishan needs to learn to bat in the middle order.
"So he has to learn to play at No. 5. When Rohit Sharma comes, Rohit and Shubman Gill will open, although Gill's performance has slightly saddened our hearts. But still if both of them open, where can Ishan Kishan get a place, it is down the order," Singh added.
