Five-time World Champion Australia has announced their preliminary squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. In a shocking decision, Australia dropped Marnus Labuschagne from the squad. This decision came after Labuschagne failed to perform in his recent India and England tours.

Notably, Labuschagne has failed to score in ODIs against India and also in the Indian subcontinent. He has been one of the biggest forces in the Australian Test squad but has recently failed to score big runs. Apart from him, Australia also retained Pat Cummins as their skipper, hoping he would be fine before the upcoming India tour.

Speaking about his injury, chairman of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that Cummins has an undisplaced fracture of his left radius, which requires six weeks of rehabilitation. He said, "We view a period of enforced rest for Pat as a positive ahead of this important World Cup campaign. There are still a number of games he could play before the World Cup, which is more than enough for him to have a strong preparation," said Bailey.

Will Steve Smith open in T20Is?

Former Australia skipper Steve Smith has been rewarded by Cricket Australia for his amazing performance in the Big Bash League 2022. He scored back-to-back centuries for the Sydney Sixers in the tournament. Ahead of last year's T20 World Cup, the 34-year-old was replaced in the squad by white-ball superstar Tim David. However, Smith silenced critics by showcasing his T20 prowess with consecutive centuries for the Sydney Sixers in the previous BBL season.

He blazed a remarkable 101 (56) against the Adelaide Strikes in Coffs Harbour and followed it up with an unbeaten 125 (66) against the Sydney Thunder at the SCG. These two knocks continue to stand as the highest scores by any Sixers player in the history of the BBL. Smith's performances served as a testament to his enduring ability in the T20 format, proving his worth as a powerful asset for his team. This also gave him an opportunity to open the inning in the shortest format of the game.
