India beat Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by innings and 132 runs at Vidarbha Cricket Stadium in Nagpur. Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shined with the ball for India as he clinched a total of eight wickets in the game including a five-wicket haul in the second innings. It is his 31st five-wicket haul in Test cricket, levelling up the record held by former spinner Anil Kumble.

On the third day of the game, Indian allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, who were on the crease, missed their much-deserved centuries by 30 and 16 runs respectively. Jadeja scored 70 runs off 185 balls while Axar scored 84 runs off 174 balls. They both added 88 runs for the 8th wicket and led India to post 400 runs. India took a huge lead of 223 runs in the first innings. However, debutant Todd Murphy took seven wickets but missed good support from the other end.

In the second innings of the game, Australia failed to counter Ravichandran Ashwin and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Ashwin with his majestic bowling dismissed David Warner, Usman Khwaja, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carry, and Peter Handscomb. Former Australia Captain Steven Smith was the only batter who stood till the end and went unbeaten on 25 runs. Six Australian batters failed to score in double digits. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammad Shami took two wickets each while Axar managed to get a wicket too.

Ravichandran Ashwin is the biggest threat to any touring nation in Indian conditions. Australia was also aware of it and organized a special camp in Bengaluru before the test series. In their special preparations, they called Mahesh Pithiya who is an action dual of Ashwin to bowl at nets. Although, practice went in vain as Ashwin destroyed the Aussie batting in the second innings.

Reacting to the same a Twitter user wrote, “Mahesh Pithiya ne inko chunna laga diya.”
