In the 17th match of IPL 2023, Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings by 3 runs on Wednesday, April 12 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The match was great for RR, but not so good for Samson, as he was dismissed without opening his account. After this, when the match was over, he was fined a whopping Rs 12 lakh for keeping slow over-rate.

It was RR's first offence of the season for minimum over-rate offences under the IPL's Code of Conduct. Therefore, a fine of Rs 12 lakh was imposed on skipper Samson. However, the fine won't affect the wicketkeeper-batter much as his team is currently the table topper in the ongoing 16th edition of the cash-rich league with 6 points.

Brilliant bowling performance by Rajasthan Royals

Talking about the match, Ravichandran Ashwin's (30 runs and 2-25) brilliant all-round performance and Jos Buttler's (52) brilliant half-century helped Rajasthan register a three-run win over CSK in a thrilling IPL match. Asked to bat first, Buttler helped Rajasthan Royals recover from the early fall of Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), while Devdutt Padikkal (38), Ashwin (30) and Shimran Hetmyer (30 not out) helped the team to 175/8 in 20 overs.

CSK's star allrounder Ravindra Jadeja was the best bowler for them as he picked up 2 wickets and conceded only 21 runs in his 4 overs quota. Coming to chase, the Super Kings were expected to chase down an easy target of 176 on a slow pitch due to dew, but Rajasthan pulled off a surprise.

On the last ball, the team needed 5 runs to win, but Dhoni was able to take only one run. In this way, despite Sandeep Sharma conceding 17 runs in the last over, CSK suffered a loss. Rajasthan Royals spinners Ashwin (2-25) and Chahal (2-27) bowled brilliantly. After this terrific victory, the Royals got their third win in 4 matches, and due to a better run rate, they have reached the top position, above Lucknow Super Giants. Ashwin won the Player of the Match award for his brilliant all-round performance.
