The 22nd match of the Indian Premier League 2023 was played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday, April 16 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Suryakumar Yadav led MI instead of Rohit Sharma as the latter put himself as an impact player. KKR headed into this game after a loss at home against SRH and registered their 3rd loss of the season against MI.

Talking about the match, MI won the toss and opted to bowl first and it proved to be the right decision initially as KKR’s openers disappointed the fans, once again. N Jagadeesan missed another opportunity to show his skills and got out on a duck after playing 5 balls. Rahamanullah Gurbaz was struggling as well and got out after scoring only 8 runs.Β

But Venkatesh Iyer came to bat at no.3 and smashed his maiden century and also broke KKR's 15-year century drought which came in 2008 by Brendon McCullum. His breathtaking knock of 104 runs off just 51 balls helped KKR to achieve a fighting total of 185 runs in 20 overs.

Brilliant batting performance by MI

Chasing the target, Rohit came on to bat as the impact player and smashed it around for the first couple of overs. Ishan Kishan also was in a free-scoring mood today as the duo eked out 16 runs off Shardul's first over, 17 off Umesh's second over, and then 22 off Narine's first over. MI had the game pretty much settled within the powerplay, as they hurried away to 72 runs.

Kishan found some form again as he smashed a quickfire fifty before Chakravarthy knocked him over. But out walked Tilak Varma, and he alongside stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav quelled any hopes of a KKR fightback. Suryakumar found his form again and played a few trademark pick-up shots over square leg to the crowd's delight. He couldn't stay till the end, but Tim David came out and finished the job with a quick cameo to help the team register their second win by 5 wickets.
