After conceding 469 runs in the first innings in the World Test Championship 2023 Final against Australia, India needed a good start in their batting innings. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill looked solid as they got a few impressive boundaries under their belt early on.

However, that did not last long as both openers were dismissed in successive overs for a total of 30 runs. While Pat Cummins dismissed Rohit, Scott Bolland got rid of the dangerous Shubman Gill.

Cummins smacked Rohit on the pads with a fuller delivery that angled inwards. The ball landed on the pads in front of the middle stump. Rohit discussed the review with Gill but ultimately decided against it. Only height could have saved him, but Cummins did get the job done.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill had a brain-fade moment and left a straightish delivery from Scott Boland. This was pitching right outside the off stump but nipping inwards. Gill left the ball, considering the line and length, but Bolland removed the top of the off stump.

Travis Head shines for Australia

Earlier, after winning the toss, Sharma chose to bowl first to take advantage of the overcast conditions on Day 1. Travis Head (163) took responsibility for Australia's quick runs for the fourth wicket, with Steve Smith (121) providing excellent support. The left-handed batsman hit a quick century while hitting plenty of boundaries. Smith battled hard as well and completed his century. In their partnership, the two scored 285 runs.

On Day 2, India, on the other hand, had some smart ideas. They hampered the batters with their short balls and were rewarded for it. While Alex Carey batted for 48 runs, Indian bowlers struck wickets at regular intervals.

Mohammed Siraj's four-wicket spell in the first innings was the standout of the bowlers for the Men in Blue. Furthermore, Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur both grabbed two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja took one. Umesh Yadav did not do well in the middle, going wicketless.
