After successfully guiding the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to a title win in the inaugural edition of the SA20, Sunrisers Hyderabad appointed Aiden Markram as the captain for the Indian Premier League 2023. While he missed the first match of the tournament due to international duties, he was back in time for the second match against Lucknow Super Giants.

However, the South African star did not have the best debut game as the team captain. He batted at number four but did not last long as Krunal Pandya got the better of him on the very first ball he faced. Markram failed to cover the line of the ball and attempted to drive. The ball, however, turned past the bat and crashed into the off-stump. Notably, this was Krunal Pandya's third wicket of the game on a sluggish wicket, in contrast to the previous game, where Mark Wood took a five-wicket haul.

Before the season began, Hyderabad named Markram as their new captain. The Proteas' star batter previously won the SA20 tournament as captain of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, which is owned by the Hyderabad team. In that tournament, he impressed everyone with his bat and part-time off-spinning abilities. After scoring 366 runs and taking 11 wickets, Markram was named Player of the Tournament.

After being named captain of the Hyderabad team and having the opportunity to work with Brian Lara. Markram said: “Very excited. We have worked briefly together last year when he was batting coach and we got on really well, certainly looking forward to working with him. We actually going to meet up now, he is the batting coach for the West Indies Test series. So we are going to see each other a bit in the next two weeks”.

“We discussed yesterday that that’s where we would start our planning in terms of the brand of cricket we would be playing and those sort of things. I am pretty sure we both will be on the same page when it comes to play a nice positive brand of cricket where guys can fully express themselves,” Markram added.
