Pakistan vice-captain all-rounder Shadab Khan is likely to be replaced for the upcoming ODI World Cup. In case this happens, the Pakistan cricket team has decided to appoint a new vice-captain. The leg-spinner only picked three wickets as Pakistan got out of the Asia Cup in the Super 4 stage.

Previously skipper Babar Azam expressed his displeasure with some senior cricketers. Shadab Khan is one of the players under scrutiny who is likely to be snubbed. Abrar Ahmed is in in front-runner to be included in the World Cup squad.

Shaheen Shah Afridi front-runner to be appointed as vice-captain

According to reports, a few changes are also being considered by the board. It stated, "During their meeting, the chief selector and the skipper also discussed the fitness problems and bad form of the important players." If Shadab Khan is set to be replaced, Shaheen Shah Afridi is the frontrunner to become the vice-captain for the Asian Giants.

Shadab took six wickets at an average of 40.83 in five matches during the Asia Cup 2023. Captain Babar Azam has faced criticism for his consistent selection of the vice-captain. He might be replaced by the young spinner Abrar Ahmed, the 24-year-old bowler who came into the limelight during the Test series against England. The leg-spinner is quicker through the air than Shadab and has a mystery surrounding him. He has played only Test format, playing six matches and picking 38 wickets.

With the vice-captain space vacant, Shaheen showed his leadership skills in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he led the Lahore Qalandars to consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023. Afridi has represented Pakistan in 27 tests, 44 ODIs, and 52 T20Is, amassing 255 international wickets.

Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq and skipper Babar Azam are soon to hold a meeting with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf. Apart from Shadab, opener Fakhar Zaman’s place is also in doubt. The decision will be taken on the players after his approval. Teams can give their final list of the squad on 28th September.
