With a thumping victory against defending champions Sri Lanka, India qualifies for the finals of the Asia Cup 2023. After posting a below-par total of 213/10, Indian bowlers once again made the game for the team. Star spinner Kuldeep Yadav clinched four wickets and became the fastest Indian to clinch 150 ODI wickets.
Earlier in the game, India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. His decision went well with the team, as India posted 80 runs for the first wicket. Rohit, along with Shubman Gill, hammered Sri Lankan pacers and looked comfortable against them. However, left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage came up with a special plan.
He dismissed Gill, Rohit, and Kohli within four overs and changed the momentum of the game. Gill, in his inning, scored 19 runs off 25 balls with the help of two fours. Meanwhile, Rohit, in his innings, scored 53 runs off 48 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes. On the other hand, yesterday's hero, Kohli, had an off day as he struggled against Wallalage. He eventually departed after scoring just three runs off 12 balls.
In the end, after some efforts from wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul, India crossed the 200-run mark. Kishan scored 33 runs off 61 balls with the help of a four and a six. On the other hand, last match's centurion, Rahul, scored 39 runs off 44 balls with the help of two boundaries. Wallalage clinched five wickets and proved to be a beast for Indian batters. In the end, India reached 213/10 in 49.1 overs.
Dunith Wellalage failed to clinch the game for Sri Lanka
After his bowling performance, Wallalage showcased his batting abilities. While chasing a below-par total of 214 runs, Sri Lanka lost five wickets for just 73 runs. Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj created havoc in the Sri Lankan line-up. However, Wallalage stood at an end and remained unbeaten while Kuldeep wound up things for India.
Wellalage, in his fighting innings, scored an unbeaten 42 runs off 46 balls with the help of three fours and a six. He tried to rescue Sri Lanka by securing a 63-run partnership with Dhanjaya de Silva for the seventh wicket. However, Kuldeep continued his dominance with the ball and took quick wickets to wind up the game. With this victory, India reached the finals of the prestigious tournament.
