Former India opener Virender Sehwag believes India skipper Rohit Sharma is the front-runner to be the leading runscorer for the ODI World Cup. Sehwag explained that due to batting-friendly conditions in India, the openers will get a lot of opportunities to star during the upcoming ODI World Cup.

In the previous World Cup in 2019, he finished as the top runscorer. He ended up with 648 runs from 9 matches at an average of 81. India lost against New Zealand in the semi-final of the World Cup. The Men in Blue will start of their World Cup campaign against five-time champions Australia in Chennai.

In a video on Cricket Governing Body's Instagram handle, Sehwag was asked to predict the leading run-getter of the World Cup 2023. He picked Rohit and said, "India has got good wickets, so I think openers will get good opportunities. If I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but I am Indian and I should pick an Indian, so Rohit Sharma."

Praising him the former opener stated, "When the World Cup comes, his energy level, his performance goes up. So, I am sure . And this time, he’s the captain also. I am sure that he will make a difference and will score lots of runs."

The 36-year-old has featured in 244 ODIs, amassing 9837 runs at an average of 48.69, with 30 hundreds and 48 fifties. Rohit has been in good form this year in all formats of the game. In the 16 matches, he has played in all formats of the game this year, and has scored 923 runs at an average of 48.57.

Previously, Aakash Chopra predicted that Rohit Sharma would lead the team from the front and go big in the World Cup this year and score two centuries and a big hundred during the tournament. Sehwag also said Rohit would be the difference maker for India during the tournament.
