New Zealand's white-ball skipper Kane Williamson is set to be a part of the 15-men squad for Black Caps for the upcoming Cricket World Cup in India. He sustained a knee injury during his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023 but has made significant strides in his recovery.
His inclusion in the Kiwi squad will be a major boost for the team. However, his inclusion does not necessarily imply he will be match-ready for the opening game. Williamson is presently with the New Zealand limited-overs squad in England, where he is continuing his rehab.
Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation: Gary Stead
New Zealand head coach, Gary Stead praised the Kiwi skipper and said, "Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation and has been supported by a strong group of experts around him." "He’s left no stone unturned in trying to get back to playing cricket at the highest level."
"We are delighted to be in a place to select him. At the same time, he’s also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn’t wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we’ve previously said, it’s great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term."
He further stated, "As we’ve said throughout this process we want to give Kane every bit of available time to aid his recovery. The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match."
The veteran batter has played only 12 ODIs since the end of the 2019 Cricket World Cup final, but remains a key part of the fifty-overs squad and has a phenomenal record in the format. New Zealand is set to name the World Cup squad on September 11.
He injured his knee on March 31, when he was fielding for Gujarat Titans in the opening game of the IPL season against Chennai Super Kings. He jumped up on the boundary to try and catch a ball that was going for six.

Very brave of you to think only the New Zealand people care for their cricket or their cricketers, especially like Kane Williamson. He's easily everyone's 3rd or 4th favourite in the world.

That's great news! His injury was quite severe in the IPL, but I hope his comeback will be even stronger. Kane Williamson is the best captain in current world cricket.
