India is a country of 1.4 billion people, a large population of which follows cricket as a religion. This love for the game and a huge amount of audience then becomes a great target pool for companies who want to sell their products.
As a result of all this, cricket becomes a huge market that everyone wants to dominate. For broadcasting companies a monopoly in cricket brings in billions of rupees as revenue and hence the fight between the big players is very cutthroat in India.
Big players like Star, Doordarshan and Sony have been fighting it out when it comes to cricket broadcasting for decades. Now, a new player in the form of Reliance Jio has come up and is shaking the broadcasting market in India.
The company owned by the richest man in India recently broadcasted FIFA World Cup as well as the Indian Premier League to millions of people for free. This inadvertently resulted in a lot of revenue loss for Hotstar and SonyLiv who are fighting for the same viewership.
In a move to thwart this challenge from JioCinema, Hotstar has taken a leaf out of Reliance's books and done the same. The Star-owned platform has announced ODI World Cup 2023 to be free for all mobile users in India. Naturally, it came as a pleasant surprise for cricket fans in the country who took to social media to voice their opinion.
Here's how Twitter reacted to the news of Hotstar announcing free World Cup streaming:
