England pacer James Anderson has come under the scanner after his subpar performance so far in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series. Australia retained the Ashes after the fourth Test match got washed on Day 5 in Manchester on Sunday, 23 July.
The visitors are currently leading the series 2-1 but the hosts will look forward to ending the series with a win and make it 2-2 in the final Test match at Oval which is starting tomorrow 27th July. Just before the final Test, the 41-year-old dropped a message for his fans and the cricket world that he still has the hunger to play more cricket.
I keep talking to the coach and captain and they still want me around: James Anderson
Anderson stated in his column in Telegraph, "I keep talking to the coach and captain and they still want me around. So as long as I am still hungry and want to put in the work I will keep trying to give my best for the team. That is exactly where I am at the moment."
"I love playing Test cricket as much as ever and this is my favourite period as an England cricketer. Just being around this group, the way we play and how we enjoy ourselves on the field. There are no thoughts of retirement."
He further stated, "I have certainly not had the returns I would have liked in this series. Everyone goes through a lean patch but you just don’t want it to be in the most high-profile series we play. Ten or 15 years ago the debate would be about whether I should be dropped. Now it is about my future. I understand that. It is the Oval, the end of a series and a time for speculation."
The 40-year-old has 689 Test wickets to his name and has only four wickets in the three Tests of this series at a hugely expensive average of 76.75. He took just one wicket at Old Trafford after being rested for England’s win in the third Test at Headingley.
Anderson has bowled at the Oval on Tuesday, he feels good and is now fully fit after his back spasm in the third Test.
