In the do-or-die game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians once again disappointed with their poor bowling performance. While bowling first, the five-time champions conceded 200 runs for the fourth time this season. However, young pacer Akash Madhwal stood up for them and clinched much-needed wickets in slog overs to restrict SRH to 200/5 in 20 overs.
After being called to bat first, SRH opener Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal added 140 runs for the first wicket. Vivrant, in his maiden IPL half-century, scored 69 runs off 47 balls with the help of nine boundaries and two sixes. On the other hand, Agarwal, in his magnificent innings, scored 83 runs off 46 balls with the help of eight boundaries and four sixes. Notably, both of the batters were dismissed by Young Akash Madhwal, who gave a ray of hope for MI.
Madhwal, in his brilliant spell, dismissed Agarwal, Sharma, Henrich Klaasen and Harry Brook. He dismissed Brook and Klaasen on consecutive deliveries and was on a hat-trick. He finished his spell with brilliant numbers of 4-0-37-4. Apart from him, Chris Jordan also clinched a wicket for MI as he dismissed SRH skipper Aiden Markram.
Can MI chase another 200+ target?
To stay alive in the race to playoffs, Mumbai Indians need to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in this crucial game. MI will need to score 201 runs to beat SRH and they are good to chase 200+ scores this year. However, since 2015, SRH has defended ten 200+ scores and never lost a single game while defending 200-plus targets.
Notably, despite winning this game, Mumbai Indians will need to back Gujarat Titans in their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. If RCB lose that game and MI beat SRH, Rohit Sharma and the company will qualify for the playoffs without thinking about the net run rate. It's worth noting that MI has a poor net run rate before this game and it might haunt them.
Here is how fans react to Akash Madhwal's spell:
